How to Motivate Yourself To Do Laundry

Laundry Room Organization + Update

Do you love doing laundry? Zero judgment either way. If you do please give me tips so I can, too, ha! If you are like me and don’t love it, I think I may have discovered a hack to motivate laundry duties: I believe if you like what you see when you go into the laundry room you’ll be encouraged to do laundry! I decided it was time to organize the laundry room and give it a little refresh.

This means I made it less overwhelming by organizing and making it welcoming. The budget was $100. I had to be creative and look around our house to use what I already had. I did the same thing here and saved a TON!

One of the things that makes the laundry room overwhelming is the lack of organization. Everything has just been out or thrown on the shelf. (Yes, singular shelf.) Another thing that made it overwhelming was how I could see everything. This sounds odd as I type it because I usually want to be able to see everything.

I mean look at what I walked into every day:

I am a little embarrassed to share this!

No wonder I didn’t want to go in there! Is this relatable for you? Nevertheless, it is why the laundry room is my choice for my first whole room makeover in our new house. I am going to share exactly how to organize the laundry room and made it inviting and motivating in six steps!

Step 1: Clear your space

Always remove everything from the area you are organizing and clean all the bare surfaces. A clean slate allows you to visualize how you want to area to function and realize what you want to see. Is it a clean space? Is it a fun picture? It also helps you in step 2.

Step 2: take inventory

Lay everything out where you can see it. This is when you can get rid of anything you don’t use or that is empty. This is when you will be able to see what you will need when decanting or putting in a tub if need be. I can’t tell you how many times I have picked up an almost empty bottle of detergent.

Decanting is typically used when talking about wine but I believe is great for keeping inventory of any product. All it means is taking a product and putting it in a different container. When using a clear jar or bin you can see how much you have and keep your shopping lists up to date!

Step 3: Find storage solutions to organize the Laundry room

I went around my house to find plastic bins/trays and I also took a trip to The Container Store. Friend, why is The Container Store so peaceful? It is just so full of possibilities it makes me feel happy. Here is what I bought:

This is what I already had around the house:

Step 4: Place the storage Bins where you want them

This is to see if your bins will fit. Place them in a cabinet or jars on your wheelie cart. It is a dry run before you put all of your cleaners in them and realized they’re too large or small. This step has taken me a few mistakes to master; please, save yourself the time and headache, ha.

Step 5: Group like items

Sort everything you plan to keep by category. My categories we simple: refills and everything else. This worked for organizing our laundry room because the storage bins were labeled with what is inside.

Next, put the storage bins where you decided in your dry run. Don’t forget to label if you have containers that aren’t see-through.

Here are different types of labels makers including the one I used:

Step 6: Decorate

Decorating is the most fun step for motivating yourself to do laundry. It is kind of important that you know what motivates or encourages you. I am always happy to clean when I have a new product or mop. What about you? Choose your favorite motivational quotes or inspirational pictures. Here are some ones I loved from Esty:

Decorating takes me a while because I can be indecisive. I am happy and motivated to do laundry now with the laundry room cleared of unnecessary clutter! We plan to add cabinets and make it more functional with a folding desk and maybe a coffee pot! ?

Look at this before and after:

Organize your laundry room to make it clutter-free and function is a low-cost way to motivate yourself to do laundry. You can go all in and repaint and retile, but it isn’t necessary sometimes we just need some brain space and a little eye candy to get us up and moving.
